  • Born and raised in the Northeast, Joe received his BFA in Architecture with a minor in Building Technology from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. While at UMass, he participated in the design and construction of permaculture gardens on campus, and completed a certification course at Sirius Community, where he studied green building and sustainable design. Through these experiences, he discovered a passion for working with his hands, and designing with a palette of living, breathing plant material.

Since moving to San Francisco in 2012, he has focused his work toward residential urban landscapes, creating ecologically rich spaces that respond to the unique conditions of each site and specific client needs.

His work with JML has earned multiple awards and aims to push the envelope of regenerative gardening practices.

Collaborative
Design

All of the gardens we create are custom designed to meet the unique individual tastes and functional needs of our clients. Our experience with sustainable practices adds long-term value to every design.

Efficient
Installation

Your designer and installation lead are one and the same, closing the loop between design and installation so that details don’t be lost in translation. A single source for design and installation is the most efficient way to ensure your new landscaping is built the way it was designed. JML installation crews work closely with the designer throughout the install process in order to realize the homeowner's vision.

Hassle-Free
Garden Care

Our gardens are designed with maintenance in mind. We design our gardens so that plants have room to grow. As your family grows and your needs change, the effectively designed space will accommodate changes in use. Many of our clients have enjoyed their garden for years, which has helped us to understand how great gardens work.

A Commitment to Sustainability

  • We design, install, and maintain our gardens to minimize resource use over the life of the garden while positively benefiting the environment by enhancing carbon exchange and creating safe havens for birds and beneficial insects.

  • Our designs emphasize reuse potential of materials that are already on-site.

  • We emphasize proper selection and placement of plants which results in more efficient water use, minimal need for fertilizers and pesticides, and limited debris over the life of the garden.

  • We adhere to and practice integrated pest management, employing least toxic means to keep a garden healthy, including using beneficial insects, good cultural practices, and selecting plants which will thrive.

  • We are early adopters of more environmentally friendly products including VOC compliant stains, less toxic pressure treated wood, and recycled construction materials.

  • We utilize technology, such as the 'Smart Irrigation Controller' and LED fixtures to maximize efficiency of water and electricity use.
