Backyard Oasis

in Ashbury Heights

The intention with this garden was to provide tranquil respite from the busy city around. The colorful foliage and textural canopies create the feeling of an exotic landscape that transports to another world. The perfect hideaway, just a few steps away.

A huge concrete slab occupied the prime real estate adjacent to the rear of the home and stood to eat up too big a chunk of the client budget to be worth removing. The silver lining was that it provided a stable base for our new decking to anchor to, elevating the new outdoor living space up above the mess.

From the interior, the garden is now just a few steps down, allowing for seamless indoor outdoor living on the warm days we savor so much here in San Francisco.

Beyond the main deck area, the stacked stone work harkens back to old world craft, ensconcing an ornamental fountain as a focal point. Unlike the concrete, we chose to honor the aesthetic value of the existing lush green Camellias, Impatiens, and tree ferns, complementing with luscious color from tropical cousins like Phormium and Canna lily.

For the adventurous type, a decomposed granite walkway leads through the shadow of the jungle, then hooks and climbs to a fire bowl gathering space … and canopy becomes shelter.
